Published! Iraq, Cheney and Free Agency!
Just a couple of things...
My latest blog was printed in the "Tennessean" newspaper on the Editorial page. That was a "first" for me and I gave myself a small smile for it. Writing this blog has been interesting. It's amazing to see how many hits it gets from foreign countries. The only downside is no one but "Barrier Island Girl" consistently leaves a comment.
It was surprising to see that Senator McCain received so few votes in the "straw ballot" at the GOP meeting in Memphis. I've liked McCain since he begged the administration to get more boots on the ground in Iraq. Maybe the administration's deep secret is that there are no more boots available to increase the necessary security. I don't know if that's true, but I like his style and he was duly reticent in supporting the recent debacle of Senators trying to void the Dubai PW contract. That was the most stupidly contrived coup against the President I've ever seen and now you have Sen. Feingold trying to censure the President like a nun giving raps across knuckles in Home Room. Please....
It is discouraging to see the constant and negative rhetoric against the President. Isn't it just feasible that President Bush does have a vision to open the gates of freedom to all who dwell in the Middle East? These people, except for the minority of students who have studied abroad, have never experienced the kind of freedom we enjoy every day. The very thought of that freedom could be the scariest choice they could make! Couple that with the rival religious party's that exist, it's going to be worse than LA cops getting outlaw gangs to the table for some reformation that would decrease violence. Everybody has their turf to protect!
I sure support Tom Friedman's essay in the paper today that proffered Dick Cheney was mean enough to get dissenting Iraqis to the table to work out a stable solution toward their democracy. He would clearly illustrate to them that they had an "either/or" choice to make. If that didn't work, he could take his hunting rifle as a gavel. That bit of humor doesn't override Tom's cogent argument that Cheney is probably the one American who could seriously get their attention. These Iraqis need to grow up, sit up on both cheeks and get the job done because we are increasingly willing to walk away.
Lastly, please, please Floyd, do not consider Culpepper or Brees as a valuable addition to the team. Let's go full out for Leinart...hopefully the Saints will give Brees a solid home base and Matt will be available at #3. Floyd could make a good choice for the wide receiver from Pats in free agency, but he really doesn't move fast enough to close a deal.
Thas' all folks!

Tallulahpig - What an interesting name!
I have no reason not to publish any comments as you can see. I only wish I could answer directly to the comment, but the sender's email address is obscured.
One can't have a debate if there's no way to discuss.
In response to your other comment, all I can say is that it's fair to be disappointed with the outcome of some of the President's actions and/or lack of action. Maybe I'm an idealist but most of what he has proposed has been appropriate for the Party he represents. It just seems that the implementation of many of the issues have been derailed by mis-information. For example, the re-structure of Social Security was bombarded by people and media (AARP) by scaring elderly people (I'm one) that his ideas would take away their SS payments. That's the farthest from the truth. On prescriptions that I'm eligible for, it has worked very well and I don't know what the dispute is all about.
Now, for Iraq, I felt we could have the same success of bringing democracy to that country as we did Afghanistan. It would appear the problem was not having enough troops to close the security issues. We also did not anticipate the Al Queda interference which has been tragic. However, if the US could put an extremely strong personality (as I suggested in my recent Blog) in the room with the Iraqi officials and knock some heads together, I think we can overcome even Al Queda.
No President makes 100% correct decisions and I think it's too early to determine what the long term results will be on Iraq. I think we need to stay tuned!
Lincoln and Roosevelt had to hold off the wolves until they could get the job done. The trouble with Americans today is that they want world events to be played out like a mini-series on TV. Unfortunately life doesn't work that way, there's more twists and turns in every real-life drama.
Thanks for your comments!

Interesting you say that the ports should be operated by company's, not governments. Well, who operates the ports in the US are American longshoremen, members of the Longshoremen Union. This past week it was disclosed that the northern and eastern ports are actually controlled by the Mafia who have corrupted the Union.
As I mentioned in one of my Blogs, it makes not a tinker's damn who contractually manages the Ports, it's is who OPERATES the ports and that, my friend, is the Longshoremen's Union. Also, to reiterate, the Longshoremen have rejected the purchase of equipment that has the capability of surveying the cargo containers 100%, not the current 5 - 6%! Apparently, they rejected this because they might lose members...no thought that we might lose CITIES through terrorist bombs or chemicals.
To validate the corrupt involvement in current Port security, why don't you archive your closest large city paper and do a search on "Ports and Mafia."
You can probably turn up even more reasons why the focus should be on actual operation security and not who has a contractual obligation.
I don't mind replying in detail to your questions/comments, but I would respectfully ask you to gather and present your facts with more clarity before you impugn my integrity.
I can't believe there are still people in this country who allow this silver-spoon brat more room to screw up. Wake up, girl. This guy is taking us for every penny he can cheat out of us. He does NOT care for our troups, otherwise he would not have treated them so poorly while giving the really, REALLY rich more tax breaks. FIRST TIME IN US HISTORY THAT TAX BREAKS WERE GIVEN IN TIME OF WAR.
Patriotism begins with helping out in time of war; not getting rich by taking advantage of the chaos.
Lefty -
Really don't know what provoked your socialist outrage about taxes. It's not something I've ever discussed, but I'm going to think about what I think you are saying and write a response in one of my future Blogs.
Patriotism does mean helping out in time of war and as a child of WWII, I recall the sacrifices we made in food, gasoline, priority transportation and tires. Americans really aren't being asked to make any sacrifices this time around and that's probably an error.
